CHANDIGARH: A study by two NGOs to understand the nature of
lesbian behaviour in the city has found that most women take to this alternative sexuality while staying in hostels of educational institutions or working at call centres and marketing companies.
Apart from personal choice, the reasons for these women's turning lesbian were found to be an abusive childhood or being widowed or divorced.
The survey was conducted by two NGOs from March to June 2011 with 100 women being part of the sample. It was intended to find the nature of lesbian behaviour and their fathom their awareness about sexually transmitted diseases.
One of the key surveyors, Ashwani Kumar, said that while 50% of those surveyed were in the age group of 18-25, the remaining in 26-44 (40%) and 45-55 (10%) categories. ''As the average number of partners of respondents was found to be very high, it is believed that the relationships were temporary in nature,'' he disclosed.
Data of these respondents were collected from sectors 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 18, Mohali's phase-IIIB2 and sectors 68, 69, 70, 71 and 72 and Panchkula's sectors 4, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18. Around 55% respondents were found to be from well-to-do families.
